Book Review – 20 Most Asked Questions About the Amish & Mennonites
I came across this interesting book entitled 20 Most Asked Questions About the Amish & Mennonites. First published in the late 1970’s, it deals with the most commonly asked questions, some of which I hear all the time, about Anabaptist-type groups such as the Amish, Mennonites, Hutterites, and so forth. I found it a fascinating read. As succinctly as possible this book tries to answer such questions as “What is the difference between Amish and Mennonites?”, “Are they a Christian group, or do they represent another religion?”. Even odd ones like “Is food a part of their religion?” is dealt with clearly and fairly honestly. I was impressed by the way the authors were able to handle some pretty detailed issues in such a short-and-to-the-point way. Also, the book is written by Christians as opposed to an “outside” look from a secular viewpoint the way so many of these types of books are written. I highly recommend it. Getting Plugged In
Well, here I am writing from the US of A as a resident instead of a visitor. I’m enjoying all kinds of new experiences:
- A new country. The US is very similar to Canada actually.
- A new town. Going from pop. 70,000 to 15,000 is actually a big difference for me.
- A new driver’s license. I have to take all the tests over again like a new driver.
- A new bank. Actually, I like the financial services available to Americans better than the ones we had in Canada.
- A new home. Definitely different, very comfortable, the largest property I’ve lived at in ten years.
- New shopping outlets to price out. I hate shopping if anyone wonders.
- Hopefully a new job soon.
- The same church. I wouldn’t want that to have changed
That’s just a partial list. An international move is definitely an experience to be remembered.
Moving
Well, our move will be underway, beginning at 7am Wednesday, when we will be picking up one of those old orange and white trucks that are so commonly seen along various intersates with the hood propped open. (Hopefully we won’t have that kind of an adventure.) Hey, if you have any hints, tips or interesting moving stories of your own, feel free to comment. Until next time…
